Surfing in the City
Let My People Go Surfing. Have you read it? Patagonia Founder Yvon Chouinard wrote this book about "the persistence and courage that have gone into being head of one of the most respected and environmentally responsible companies on earth."
I was in Munich a few years ago, in search of the perfect hotel for travelers on our Lumi Experiences ski vacations. Somewhere central with good access to explore the city. Ideally a family run hotel where our guests can feel at home. I was finishing a meeting with a hotel owner when he commented on my Patagonia backpack. He asked if I ever read Chouniard's 'Let My People Go Surfing' (I had), then he said: "I let my people go surfing."
As if on cue, someone walked into the 4-star hotel in Munich wearing a wetsuit and carrying a surfboard. "What?!" I turned to him with surprise. He grinned and told me about the artificial surf wave, just a few blocks away in the heart of Munich. I knew I had found the perfect hotel for our guests.
In a normal year, today marks the start to the Lumi Experiences Dolomitenlauf & Marcialonga trip. Guests typically arrive in Munich and have a day to explore on their own before we travel to Lienz in Tyrol, Austria on Friday to start the trip.
I'll be sharing a few reflections in the coming days of what typically happens on our trips this time of year. Hopefully they help you experience travel at a time when most of us are much closer to home.
If you're looking for more inspiration about where to travel on your next trip, visit www.lumiexperiences.com. You can even save $300 on any of our guided group trips when you book before March 31, 2021. Whether it's surfing or skiing, I look forward to seeing you on the trail soon and sharing more memories in the coming days.
