What's in the Bag? Travel packing tips with Olympian Julia Kern

Olympian Julia Kern celebrates with Lumi guests at the 2023 World Championships in Planica, Slovenia

In August, US Ski Team skiers Julia Kern and Jessie Diggins started their on-snow international travel to prepare for the upcoming 2024/25 ski season! In New Zealand, they put in lots of kilometers and participated in New Zealand’s Merino Muster Worldloppet event.

Lumi Experiences is excited to support athletes on the US Ski Team like Julia Kern, who won a bronze medal in the Team Sprint at the last World Championships in Planica, Slovenia, and she is also a great representative off of the race course. This is the 10th winter in a row Julia is traveling the World Cup circuit for 4.5 months straight and she has her packing dialed in.

As Worldloppet skiers are starting to think about their upcoming trips this winter, we asked Julia for recommendations on what to pack for a ski trip. Check out Julia’s “What’s in the Bag” video as she shares what she packs for a ski trip to New Zealand!

Hopefully Julia’s packing hacks are helpful for your upcoming skiing adventures. If seeing Julia’s packing tips inspire your next ski trip, check out Lumi’s 2025 Ski Trips that still have limited space available below, including the opportunity to cheer on Julia and Jessie at the 2025 Tour de Ski trip in Italy or the 2025 World Championships in Trondheim, Norway (save $300 on Week 1 before October 15)!

If you’d rather avoid the crowds, check out Lumi’s sight-skiing trips, including the popular Seefeld & Seiser Alm Trip (which Jessie Diggins affectionately refers to as “Seiser Awesome”) and Slovenia & Italy Trip, where you can ski beneath the Julian Alps at the Planica venue where Julia and Jessie teamed up to earn bronze at the last World Championships. Wherever you decide to go, you’ll have the support of Lumi’s expert, local trip leaders and many tasty treats to enjoy along the way.

See you on the trail,

The best skiers, including Julia and Jessie, will converge at the Granåsen Ski Centre outside of Norway's 3rd largest city, Trondheim, for two weeks of competitions. Only once every two years: the World Champs are one of Lumi's most popular types of trips. Discover the trails around Trondheim in a country where skiing is the way of life, and sample the city’s “new Nordic” food scene after an evening boat ride along the Trondheim Fjord.

Two of our most popular destinations!
January 5 - 12, 2025

Ski two incredible trail networks in Europe and dine at some of our favorite trailside huts along the way. There is no ski racing on this trip, just beautiful accommodations, kilometers of trails with mountain views, and cozy trailside huts serving traditional Italian & Austrian food.

Explore beautiful Slovenia by ski!
March 2 - 8, 2025

Visit Slovenia during their magical winter season. Discover plentiful cross-country ski trails with fabulous views of the Julian Alps, explore snowy mountain villages and visit scenic Lake Bled. At the beginning of the trip get to know Slovenia’s capital Ljubljana and at the end, Venice’s canals.

Skiing in France’s popular Jura region!
February 3 - 10, 2025

The Jura Mountains’ location on the French-Swiss border makes for unparalleled wine and cheese tasting, both on and off the trails. Stay in a rural village surrounded by groomed trails that wind their way through forests and towns to warm huts serving French cuisine. This winter, ski the new Transju course that has been re-routed for snow resiliency and ends walking distance from our lodging.

Get to know Switzerland’s ski scene
March 3 - 10, 2025

The gently rolling Engadin ski marathon in Switzerland’s scenic Engadin Valley is the perfect course for new Worldloppet skiers, especially those who prefer to skate ski. The alpine cheese here rivals the Comté and Mont d'Or found in France's Jura Mountains. For a birds-eye view of the valley, take a historic funicular high above. On the way to Zurich, travel through the Swiss Alps on the famed Bernina Express Railway.
