MONTANA SELF-GUIDED: BOZEMAN, BIG SKY AND YELLOWSTONE
Discover the unique aspects of Yellowstone and Montana in winter
The vibrant college town of Bozeman is the perfect place to kick off your next western winter adventure. Several ski trail networks, including Crosscut and Lone Mountain, are accessible within a short drive. These areas are favorites for locals and visitors alike. When you’re not out skiing, Bozeman provides a variety of restaurants and breweries. Our favorite bed and breakfast is located a short walk from Main Street and offers one of the best breakfasts this side of the Atlantic. Lone Mountain is a Nordic paradise, located at the base of Big Sky ski resort, it offers almost 100 km of meandering trails with several options for lunch stops along the way.
West Yellowstone is home to the Rendezvous ski trail network. Consistent, early season snow attracts thousands of skiers every Thanksgiving. The skiing at Rendezvous is excellent and, after December 15, West Yellowstone offers access to Yellowstone National Park, including Old Faithful and skiing in the Upper Geyser Basin. Ski trails offer the opportunity to glide through one of the world’s most unique ecosystems. The north Mammoth entrance to the park offers a variety of ski trails, hot springs and wildlife as well. Spend time skiing around the Mammoth Hot Springs and take a wildlife spotting drive through the Lamar Valley, home to herds of wolves, bison and elk. Winter is the perfect time of year to avoid Yellowstone’s crowded summer season and discover some of North America’s best Nordic skiing.
