VERMONT SELF-GUIDED: MIDDLEBURY & STOWE
Head to the Green Mountain state to discover some of New England’s best cross country skiing
There’s more than just skiing on tap for your next ski trip to Vermont. It’s farm-to-table food system offers excellent dining and the famous craft beer, cider and spirits scene means you can pair your favorite dish with the best local drinks. With iconic covered bridges and church steeples, the New England college town of Middlebury is the perfect place to begin. For skiing, head from the Champlain Valley into the Green Mountains to the Rikert Nordic Center; the hub for a virtually endless network of ski trails that spoke out through rolling fields and along forest roads. You can even ski past the Robert Frost Cabin, where the famous poet wrote many of his famous works. Today, the trails inspire author and environmentalist Bill McKibben, whose annual tally of days skied at Rikert often exceeds 100.
Continue your trip with a visit to Waitsfield and Warren, home to Ole’s cross country ski center. This unique ski area doubles as an airport in the summer, surrounded by views of alpine ski areas Sugarbush and Mad River Glen. Several restaurants offer a cozy place to warm up and refuel after your ski. Continue your journey north through Waterbury, home to Ben & Jerry’s ice cream, the famous Heady Topper brewery and the Cabot Cheese farmers store, on your way to Stowe.
The Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe is your home for the rest of your trip, where you can walk out your door and ski the trails that attracted the Von Trapp family to settle in Vermont after leaving their home in Austria. Ski to the popular Slaton Cabin for a bite to eat along the trail. After your ski, raise a glass of Trapp Lager at the brewery on-site. There is plenty to explore at the resort in the village of Stowe, including the history of local snow sports at the Vermont Ski and Snowboard Museum. Winter is the perfect time of year to visit Vermont, a cross country skiers paradise.
