Norway & Birken Trip
Our most popular trip in 2024 & 2025!
March is the perfect time to visit Norway with long, sunny days and plenty of snow. Three nights overlooking the Oslo fjord from your hotel high on the Holmenkollen plateau provide a unique combination of urban activity and endless ski trails. Ski right from your hotel to your heart’s content, in a country where skiing is the way of life. Stop in one of the many trailside huts and sample the Norwegian delicacy of Brunost: the sweet brown cheese that melts in your mouth and is typically served atop thin waffles with jam. A visit to the Norwegian Ski Museum and Holmenkollen ski jump provide context for the importance of skiing here and a stunning view of Oslo below. A favorite local activity is sledding the Korketrekkeren or “corkscrew” trail, accessible by tram so you can simply enjoy the childhood thrill of swooshing downhill.
Your week continues in Lillehammer, site of the 1994 Olympic Games and proverbial birthplace of skiing. Walk out the door of your hotel and stroll the Storgata cobbled pedestrian street running through the center of town. The trip also includes a day of skiing in Sjusjøen, a skier’s paradise in the midst of virtually endless ski trails. Throughout the week, excitement builds for the Norwegian Birkebeiner, or Birken, Worldloppet ski event. The Birken commemorates the 1204 rescue of baby Prince Haakon Haakonsson. Participants of the 54 km classic ski event wear an 8 pound backpack, representing the child carried by Birkebeiner, or birch-legging warriors, from Rena to Lillehammer. Guests on the trip have the option to participate in the Birken, or one of several shorter events, with full wax support by your trip leaders. Afterwards, raise a glass with your travel companions to your week of skiing and discovery in Norway.
